"Road From Roscoe"
colored pencil and art marker
25"w x 17"h
Three figures make their way across a tree lined landscape being followed by a mysterious hulking shadow. The man in the center is being supported by two women as they walk or does he just have his arms around them out of friendship? When I first found the negative of this unidentified old photograph I knew I needed to draw this image. Not only because of its interesting composition and textures but because of its many unanswered questions.

"Come Into My Parlor"
colored pencil and art marker
24.5"w x 17"h
The year that my mother died at age 84 I drew this portrait of her as a young woman in 1940. She posed in her Sunday Best alongside a web of vines on the porch and many different types of fencing which can be seen as a visual metaphor for the life she is about to embark upon as a newly wed, with all of its possible twists, tangles and blockades.

"Anniversary"
colored pencil and art marker
17.5" x 18.5"h
Drawn from a 1950s color snapshot. The brightly patterned clothes along with a nearly hidden child "photo-bombing" from behind a cake, is coupled with their ghostlike reflections in the plastic table covering to give this drawing a surreal feeling.

"Clara and Babe"
colored pencil and art markers
18.5"w x 16"h
SOLD
My in-laws took turns taking pictures of each other in the front seat of their car in the 1940s. These pictures were classic so I decided to draw them, picturing them with Walter "Babe" in the front seat and Clara in the back. Working from black and white images I referred to car advertisements from that era for the color scheme.

"Hood Ornament"
colored pencil and art markers
12.5"w x 21.5"h
A child sits on the hood of a Hudson Terraplane with his mother standing protectively nearby. The drawing is all about the black and white tones and how they work to create the assortment of textures from the car's smooth chrome to the sun dappled trees.

"Lap of Luxury"
colored pencil and art markers
22.5"w x 22'5"h
There is a parallel between the lines etched into the weathered wood on the house and the lines in the woman's face. As I worked on this drawing my wife commented, "this woman must have been living in the lap of luxury with her new porch to do her laundry on, instead of having to scrub clothes on the yard." I loved the title "lap of luxury" not only does this woman possess a rather ample sized lap to hold babies on, but the porch itself acts as a lap to the house.

"Middletons"
colored pencil and art markers
16"w x 22"h
SOLD
At first I was reluctant to do a commissioned drawing for a friend from a family snapshot but the photograph had many elements true to being one of my drawings: the bold flowered patterns of the dresses, the dog, the trees and the large looming shadow on the lawn.

"Little Tree Head"
colored pencil and art markers
14"w x20"h
A study of window reflections from a photograph I took of my daughter looking out of a window. I was attracted to the thoughtful look on the child's face combined with how the house and tree reflections made it possible to see what she was seeing.

Being fond of photographing old signs and especially anything rusty I shot this sign many times over the years. The effects of the rust on metal and the wide variety of textures on this picture presented an attractive challenge as a drawing.

"Linda and Aggie"
colored pencil and art markers
19"w x 22"h
Rather than simply drawing this old snapshot I drew it as photograph on the page of the photo album attached with photo corners.
My late wife wrote a poem remembering the moment that this photograph was taken:
"the summer I was six
my aunt aggie insisted and complained
there were no pictures of me
and gave me a rose to hold from the bush in the yard
and i held it cautiously between the thorns
squinting blindly with the sun on my face
into the camera
and my friends stared from across the street."

"Coffee Wagon Ride"

"Home Security"
colored pencil and art markers
16"w x 23"h
My dog Jimi with his big dog bark was known for keeping my home safe from anyone or thing that passed by the front of the house. Borrowing from Andrew Wyeth's many dog portraits I incorporated a window and landscape into my canine portrait.

"David on Trike"
colored pencil and art markers

I am fond of drawing images that have several layers to them. This drawing had four levels: the child on his tricycle, the picket fence, the tree in front of the house and the house.
My father took this picture of my brother using his Kodak folding camera.

"David Doppleganger"
colored pencil and art markers
22.5"w x17.5"h
When my brother David retired after three decades of teaching music he started working in his garden. The first time I visited him after he retired I took a series of photographs of him in his garden. An accidental arrangement of these pictures on a table directed me to use two pictures of him to show the change in his life along life's path.

"Angel of the Rocks" (drawing)
colored pencil and art marker on Bristol paper.
18"w x 14"h
I usually will do a drawing prior to the painting but in this case the drawing was done after the painting. The painting now hangs at Rice Hospital but I liked the image I created this drawing for my home. It was interesting to see how differently I interpreted the water reflections, grass and rocks using the two different mediums.
